What Is The Florida Certification Board?

June 17, 2013

The Florida Certification Board is the private regulatory body in Florida that oversees the certification of addiction counselors and other addiction treatment providers throughout the state. This board, a nonprofit group dedicated to ensuring the highest level of professionalism and ethics in the industry, sets guidelines as to the minimum standards of competence for addiction counselors. The goal is to ensure the quality of addiction services provided to clients by certified counselors for addiction and substance abuse problems.

The Florida Certification Board has been in existence since 1945 and administers the CAP, CAC and CBHT certifications amongst others. Approved education providers such as The Academy for Addiction Professionals give aspiring counselors and technicians the opportunity to take core competency courses to fulfill the strict educational requirements as set forth by the FCB. The Florida Certification Board is also a participating member of the IC&RC, which regulates reciprocation of licensure and certification across multiple states and countries. As a participant in the IC&RC, the CAP level Florida Certification Board certificate is eligible for reciprocity in over 60 different states, countries and jurisdictions.

The Florida Certification Board is also tasked with investigating and sanctioning counselors under its purview that may not be acting to the highest standards of professionalism and ethics. The board is a foundational part of the integrity of the addiction treatment industry in Florida. Their oversight and requirements ensure thousands of addiction counselors are properly trained and have a level of professional understanding that makes them more effective in their jobs.
