Introducing the Annual Alton Smith Future Clinician Scholarship

A scholarship for the advancement of young people dedicated to improving access to care and increasing quality of treatment for those suffering from substance abuse and mental health issues.

The Academy for Addiction Professionals is proud to honor one of the driving forces in the growth and success of our educational program by offering (1) eligible student the opportunity to attend our in-person Certified Addiction Professional / Counselor (CAP/CAC) Course at no cost. Another (1) eligible student will be chosen to attend our Certified Behavioral Health Technician course at no cost.*

Alton Smith was the vice president of The Academy for Addiction Professionals and oversaw its rapid growth for many years until his passing in 2016. Beyond his exceptional resume and business acumen, he was widely considered a mentor buy most of those who knew him and worked with him.

While the scourge of substance abuse and mental health issues has risen to epidemic proportions, the percentage of qualifying people receiving appropriate care remains stubbornly low. Further, the number of patients needing comprehensive substance abuse and mental health care far exceeds the number of counselors and clinicians able to help them.

With this scholarship program, we look forward to training a dedicated young person who, over their career, may be able to reach and help countless individuals in need.
